Chamber music goes online - exploring a hybrid version of chamber music instruction
What happens if teachers and students agree to make more use of digital learning and communication in chamber music classes? This was the central question in the CEMPE project ePortfolio as a tool for learning, in which one teacher and five students explored CANVAS as a tool in chamber music tuition. Quite a lot happened, in fact. They used CANVAS in a variety of ways. Digital forms of learning and communication changed and widened how they worked and what they worked with. It affected the feedback forms and culture, and the student and teacher roles and responsibilities. Many of these effects were a result of technology, but also by the fact that both teacher and students were highly motivated to put in extra effort in chamber music activities. In addition to exploring what happens if chamber music goes online in a hybrid setting, this article aims to inspire students and teachers to consider new tools and tasks and to test new approaches in performance education.
