In a historical perspective, improvising has been a central part of the performer's role, but has become less prominent in the piano education. The aim of this project was to give classical pianists experience with and competency to improvise within a classical framework.
The project was organized as a project week for the classical piano students at the Norwegian Academy of Music, as an introduction to improvisation in a historical perspective, methods and techniques for improvisatory work, and an exploration of improvisation in groups with mentors.
In addition to giving students experience with improvisation, the project was intended to create a good pianistic community and safe arena.
