Characteristics of artistic research

Lundmark’s model focuses on the characteristics of scientific research. Which characteristics would be relevant to art, music and artistic research?

Artistic research is about exploration, such as enquiry, in-depth study, experimentation and innovation in performance and composition processes. It can also involve challenging existing practices and mindsets; trying out different ways of seeing and doing things. Reflection is tightly connected to artistic research. Reflection may involve gaining awareness of ideas and experiences surrounding performance or composition practices, understanding and articulating connections between one’s own practice (technique, instrument etc.), the work process (ideas, materials, methods, processes etc.), the self (impressions, expressions, experiences, body etc.) and the artistic context (inspiration, tradition, other people’s works, other people’s ideas etc.). Understanding connections means discussing practices and processes in relation to relevant contexts, i.e. identifying problems and then working with them.

On that basis, a list of characteristics of artistic research – defined as activities linked to artistic practices and processes – could include: exploring, investigating, experimenting, innovating, challenging, trialling, reflecting, articulating, problematising and contextualising.
