Students as researching artists - music technology and musicianship. LATIMPE conference 2020

The second AEC and CEMPE conference on Learning and Teaching in Higher Music Education took place in May 2020. Originally planned for the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna, but because of the covid-19 pandemic the conference was held digitally.

The recent shift to digital teaching in higher music education was initially unfamiliar to many teachers. However, due to the closure of music education institutions in March 2020, educators worldwide were compelled to transition to online learning. By the time the conference took place in May, teachers had gained valuable experiences with online teaching, creating a global need for discussions on online learning environments and the exchange of ideas for development.

The conference began with an engaging keynote by Evert Hoogendoorn, a Dutch educator and game designer, who emphasized the connection between well-designed computer games and effective learning. The event featured 23 high-quality paper presentations and an artistic performance, covering diverse topics such as tutorial software, online learning management, technical systems, online exams, student-led projects, and artistic research. Presenters included individuals from various European locations, as well as representatives from Nebraska and Mexico, creating a rich and diverse exchange of ideas among students, researchers, teachers, and technicians in higher music education.
